Flying the Arctic. This item is unavailable.Flying the Arctic

"Flying the Arctic" is a gripping first-hand account of one of the most significant achievements in the history of polar exploration and aviation. Written by the renowned explorer Sir George Hubert Wilkins, the narrative chronicles the daring 1928 flight from Point Barrow, Alaska, to Spitsbergen, Norway. This monumental journey marked the first time an aircraft successfully crossed the Arctic Ocean from North America to the European side of the polar region.

Wilkins provides a detailed record of the years of preparation, the technical challenges of flying in extreme cold, and the numerous failed attempts that preceded their ultimate success. Accompanied by his pilot, Carl Ben Eielson, Wilkins describes the breathtaking vistas of the unexplored ice pack and the harrowing moments when mechanical failure or weather threatened their survival. More than just a travelogue, "Flying the Arctic" serves as a testament to human endurance and the technological leaps that bridged the gap between the age of dog sleds and the era of modern aerial navigation. It is an essential read for those interested in the history of flight, the Arctic frontier, and the relentless spirit of discovery that defined the early twentieth century.
