Item description from seller

• Late-period work by Beresford Egan (1905–1984), the most important English post-Beardsley decadent artist. Egan's 1947 Sylvan Press 'Flowers of Evil' is his return to Baudelaire eighteen years after his breakout 1929 T. Werner Laurie illustrated Fleurs du Mal — the project that established him as the legitimate English heir to Beardsley.• Coherent decadent-tradition object: Baudelaire wrote the book that licensed decadent illustration (Les Fleurs du Mal, 1857); Egan is the last artist who could illustrate it in the idiom it earned. The 1947 Sylvan Press edition closes a circle that opened in the 1890s with the Yellow Book and Savoy.Tan cloth-over-boards with deep burgundy printed Art Deco wavy sunburst design and starred title medallion, design clean and crisp; mild handling consistent with age. Spine title legible. Internal text leaves and Egan plates clean — no foxing, no staining visible. No dust jacket. tan / earth-color cloth printed in deep burgundy/maroon.

Store description

A small personal library finding new shelves: fine-press limited editions, antiquarian leather-and-cloth, signed firsts, and the occasional 19th-century oddity. I describe condition the way I'd want one described to me — gilt rub, bumped corners, foxing where it's there — and I pack like the next owner cares as much as I do. Cambridge, Massachusetts; smoke-free.
