Octavo, brown cloth & green boards (hardcover), gilt lettering, xi, 268 pp. Fine in a Very Good dust jacket with light edgewear. From dust jacket: Virtually every month for the past 14 years, Gene Burnett has written a history piece under the title "Florida's Past" for Florida Trend, Florida's respected magazine of business and finance. Here is a collection of some of these very readable essays on many of the people and events that have shaped Florida. Burnett's easygoing style and his sometimes surprising choice of topics make history good reading. Try a chapter and you'll find you've gone on to read more. Among Achievers and Pioneers, Gene Burnett acquaints you with Julia Tuttle, a young widow who dreamed of a city rising from the swamps of southeast Florida; John Gorrie, who invented air-conditioning to heal the sick; Sidney Lanier, a poet who turned his pen to promotional prose; Peter Demens, a Russian prince who founded this St. Petersburg. Here too are Florida's Villains and Characters: "Bone" Mizelle, a cow-puncher who rode hard, drank hard, lived hard; Al Capone, who turned up in Miami in the '30s; Giuseppe Zangara, who tried to kill FDR; Napoleon's nephew, who dazzled pioneer Florida. Florida had its share of Heroes and Heroines. We meet here Osceola, the Seminole leader who fought to his death to keep his people in Fllorida; Jonathon Walker, a Pensacola abolitionist who had "SS" (slave stealer) branded on his hand; Dr. Anna Darrow, who brought medicine to the wild Florida frontier. And here is Florida at War and Peace: Nazi U-boats stalking the Atlantic coast; naturalist William Bartram recording Florida's wilderness beauty in poetic phrases; Florida's famed Civil War battle at Olustee seen through the eyes of a young private.
