Print on Demand. This book is a captivating exploration of the diverse plant life found on the Orkney Islands, a remote archipelago off the coast of Scotland. The author, a keen observer of nature, takes the reader on a journey through the islands' unique landscape, from windswept cliffs and sandy beaches to sheltered valleys and peat bogs. The book delves into the historical context of botanical study in the Orkneys, tracing the footsteps of early naturalists like James Wallace and the Reverend George Low. Their painstaking work in cataloging and classifying plants laid the foundation for the author's own detailed observations and insights. Through a blend of scientific inquiry and personal anecdotes, the book examines the principles of natural selection and how they shape the evolution of plants in these isolated environments. The author eloquently describes how the islands' unique climate, terrain, and isolation have contributed to the development of rare and distinct varieties of plants. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the beauty and resilience of the natural world, revealing the intricate web of relationships between plants, animals, and their environment. This comprehensive guide is a must -have for anyone interested in the fascinating world of botany and the history of natural science. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A Flora of Orkney has long been greatly desired by those who take an interest in the wild flowers of these islands. For over two centuries the only available information on the subject has consisted of various lists more or less incomplete and usually buried in periodicals inaccessible to the general reader.
The appearance of Mr Spence's "Flora" is especially opportune at the present time, when Nature Study is one of the educational fashions of the day, and when agricultural science is receiving so much attention.
This book is the result of many years of careful observation and research, and the author has spared neither time nor trouble in making his work as full and accurate as possible. Having lived for many years in Stenness and then in Deerness, Mr Spence has had exceptional opportunities of investigating the plants indigenous to both the West and East Mainland, while, during his holidays, he has carefully examined the vegetation of the other more important islands.
