Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth examination of the rich fossil plant material discovered in the gorge of the Columbia River, in Oregon and Washington. The detailed study of this collection, found within the Eagle Creek formation, has revealed that these sediments were laid down near a volcanic mountain range during a period of intense volcanic activity. The author provides a thorough analysis of the composition of the flora, including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, with a particular focus on the arborescent dicotyledons. Through careful comparison with modern species, the author determines that the Eagle Creek flora bears a striking resemblance to the flora of the eastern United States, indicating a similar temperate climate and moisture availability. This book adds significantly to the understanding of the plant life of the northwestern United States during the Miocene epoch and provides valuable insights into the paleoenvironmental conditions of the region. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Acknowledgment is made to Dr. J H. Bretz, of the University of Chicago, who first directed the writer's attention to this field, and who is responsible for the discovery of one of the most important plant-bearing deposits. I am indebted also to Dr. F. H. Knowlton for valuable advice and assistance in determining species, and to Dr. H. C. Cowles, of the University of Chicago, for his direction in the interpretation of the ecological data. The work during the season of 1917 was carried on with the aid of a grant from the Research Fund of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to which organization sincere acknowledgment is due.
