Paperback. The Skagit: A River. A Journey. A Teacher. is a brief naturalist and contemplative guide to one of the Pacific Northwest's great rivers.Flowing from the North Cascades toward the Salish Sea, the Skagit supports an extraordinary living system of salmon, eagles, forests, wetlands, farmland, and estuary. Its gentle lower reaches also offer something increasingly rare: the opportunity to travel through a landscape at the landscape's own pace.Part river guide, part meditation, The Skagit explores the ecology and character of the river alongside the experience of traveling upon it by kayak or canoe. It considers the current not simply as a force of water, but as a teacher-an invitation to observe more closely, resist less needlessly, and participate in movement already underway.Created in collaboration with the spirit of Float Skagit in Mount Vernon, Washington, this minimalist pocket guide is an invitation to learn about the river-and then put the book down and experience it.The current is the course.
