#404 of the 2000 copies, issued in illustrated wraps ready for custom binding in the French style. Twelve full color, tipped-in plates with gold ruling around each, and a captioned tissue guard. Nielsen also provides a wonderful title page drawing, chapter heads and initial caps, all in black and gray or black and white. The cover is printed in dark green inks with gold title. The spine has modest wear at the top and bottom, with a small amount of paper loss and a 2" split at the bottom front edge. Light creasing to cover edges but overall a handsome copy in very good condition. Interior pages are bright, printed on heavy cream-colored stock, with no foxing. Seller Inventory # 27546

In-4 de 117 pages (dont le faux-titre, au V° justification du tirage, titre orné et à deux couleurs). Illustrations de Kay Nielsen : 12 compositions hors-texte reproduites en couleurs. Les 7 en-têtes, 7 lettrines et vignettes, 7 culs-de-lampe en couleurs ont été dessinées spécialement par Pierre Courtois. Serpentes légendées. Tirage à 2400 exemplaires. N°468. Parfait état intérieur. Très beau demi-chagrin vert foncé à coins. Double filet doré sur les plats, dos à nerfs orné de caissons avec filets dorés, perles et arabesques. Tête dorée. Couvertures et dos conservés. Reliure exécutée par le relieur Knut Hasslers de Stockholm. En excellent état. Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) était un peintre et illustrateur danois dont les uvres incarnent le style ornemental de l'Art nouveau. En 1939, il est engagé par les studios Disney pour réaliser des études sur plusieurs films dont Fantasia et un projet basé sur le conte de La Petite Sirène mais qui ne verra le jour que dans les années 1980, utilisant toutefois une partie de son travail. Illustrated with twelve striking tissue-guarded mounted plates in full color, "Fleur-de-Neige et d'Autres Contes de Grimm" is a celebrated collection of twelve folktales by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who spent their lives collecting and publishing folklore during the 19th century. Kay Nielsen's fantasy illustrations are bold, and vibrant - often reproduced by a 4-color process which set him apart from his contemporaries who typically used a 3-color process. His art is characterized by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre quality and his ephemeral illustrations are intricately inventive, flirting with implausibility. One of 2,000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 794. Some foxing to slipcase. Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine. Book block starting. Text in French. Original waxy paper chemise and softcover wrappers, contents complete with 12 full color plates, additional drawings in black-and-white in the text and numerous black-and-white decorations.Binding a little weak,chemise with tears and losses and somewhat wrinkled, the stiff blue paper covers under the chemise with a previous owner's name in upper right corner in black ink, a spot of black ink below, and a small gift inscription on front cover.
