First in the Flashman series. The book details Flashman's early career (1839?1842) after his expulsion from Rugby, following his amoral rise through the British Army. Driven by his unshakeable cowardice, opportunism, and insatiable lust, Flashman is forced into a duel, a hurried marriage to the "beautiful but brainless" Elspeth, and a posting to India and then Afghanistan. Despite consistently shirking his duty, he accidentally finds himself in the thick of the disastrous First Anglo-Afghan War, witnessing the horrors of the Retreat from Kabul, only to stumble into a moment of accidental "heroism" that sees him return to Victorian England hailed as a decorated war hero: the "Hector of Afghanistan.".
