Item description from seller

FIVE BOOKS BOUND WITHIN A SINGLE VOLUME. Original quarter-leather binding. Ex-medical college library copy but no external marks as such; college library stamps on front endpapers and rear pastedown; discard stamps on front pastedown and page iii; blind stamps on first title leaf and pages 101-102; no other library marks apparent after a quick perusal. Pencil notes on front free endpaper and front flyleaf verso. Paged as: i-iv, 9-64, [4], 1-111, [1], 1-74, 1-84, 1-89. Hardcover; H 23.5cm x L 14.5cm. Scuffed brown spine leather with well rubbed marbled paper over boards; leather board corners worn; spine ends worn with strong darkening at heel; small chip at front joint head; slight splitting at tops of both joints but interior hinges solid and binding firm. Spine decorated with horizontal rubbed gilt bars; right-half loss to original title label with surviving remnant retaining some gilt lettering (spine title was "Bouillaud's Researches"). All five title pages have the same 1837 Philadelphia publisher's imprint. Dark browning to corners of endpapers; occasional strong toning to interior leaves. {BOOK 1} NEW RESEARCHES ON ACUTE ARTICULAR RHEUMATISM IN GENERAL; AND ESPECIALLY ON THE LAW OF COINCIDENCE OF PERICARDITIS AND ENDOCARDITIS WITH THIS DISEASE, AS WELL AS ON THE EFFICACY OF THE METHOD OF TREATING IT BY REPEATED BLOODLETTING AT SHORT INTERVALS ("Bouillaud's Researches"). By Jean Bouillaud; translated by James Kitchen. Old ink signature of James Kitchen on front pastedown but likely not authentic as writing style does not seem contemporary. Pagination i-iv, 9-94 matches Harvard's library catalog so jump is an original error and not a flaw. {BOOK 2} PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS ON DISEASES OF THE HEART, LUNGS, STOMACH, LIVER, ETC., ETC., OCCASIONED BY SPINAL IRRITATION: AND ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM IN GENERAL, AS A SOURCE OF ORGANIC DISEASE. ILLUSTRATED BY CASES. By John Marshall. {BOOK 3} EPIDEMICS OF THE MIDDLE AGES: NO. I. THE BLACK DEATH IN THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY. By Justus Friedrich Carl Hecker; translated by B.G. Babington. {BOOK 4} THE EPIDEMICS OF THE MIDDLE AGES: NO. II. THE DANCING MANIA. By Hecker and translator Babington. Includes "The Dance of the Tarantati" musical score and lyrics. {BOOK 5} A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON THE PRINCIPAL DISEASES OF THE LUNGS, CONSIDERED ESPECIALLY IN RELATION TO THE PARTICULAR TISSUES AFFECTED, ILLUSTRATING THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF COUGH. By George Hume Weatherhead. Pages 71-82 have creased bottom corners and short tears. Interesting compilation of uncommon 19th century medical books.
