Description:

23 pp. 11 original monochrome woodcuts by William Wrightman. Translations of four short prose pieces by Rainer Maria Rilke, 'Gym Period', 'An Encounter', 'Dolls, 'An Experience', 'Primal Sound', by Carl Niemeyer. Type face designed by Harry Duncan. #31/271 copies printed on Van Gelder Oxhead paper. Brown, tan and black marbled paper covered boards with calf covered backstrip with gilt stamped titles and decoration. Internally the spine is broken between the colophon page and free end papers although all signatures are intact and tight. There is a manufacturing flaw to the paper on page 14 (piece of thread encased in the paper) and a manufacturing crease to the head corner of page 19. The paper on the boards is rubbed along the edges through shelving. The calf backstrip is brittle and has chipped slightly at the tail and chipped and split (3 cm) at the head. Book Description Cummington: The Cummington Press, 1947., 1947. Quarto. Marbled boards, neatly rebacked in gilt calf approximating the perishable original spine. Illustrated. A bit of edgewear, but a very good copy. First this edition, adding an additional prose piece to the 1943 selection, and substituting woodcuts by Wightman Williams for those by Paul Wieghardt printed in the 1943 edition. One of 203 numbered copies on Van Gelder Oxhead paper bound thus, from a total printing of 271 copies. This copy is inscribed on the colophon by the printer/publisher, Harry Duncan: "For Caroline, with love from Harry & from Paul."
