First Steps in Number: A Primary Arithmetic is a pupils' edition by G. A. Wentworth and E. M. Reed designed to build elementary number skill through carefully graded practice. The 1894 volume begins with simple numerical relationships and develops the four fundamental operations through short problems, oral work, examples, and repeated applications suited to early arithmetic instruction.
The lessons treat addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division not as isolated rules but as connected ways of working with quantities. Fractions enter through familiar parts such as halves, quarters, and eighths, while practical measures-including common capacity and other everyday units-give children concrete settings in which numbers can be compared and calculated.
The page design reflects a classroom book meant to be used actively. Brief directions, numbered examples, mental exercises, and small word problems create a steady progression rather than long explanatory chapters. The authors repeatedly return to earlier ideas in new combinations, giving the pupil opportunities to strengthen speed, accuracy, and recognition of basic numerical patterns.
Today the book is valuable primarily as a historical primary-mathematics textbook. Currency, measures, classroom language, and pedagogical expectations reflect the late nineteenth century, so it should not replace a modern curriculum. It does, however, provide direct evidence of how arithmetic was sequenced for young learners and how practice was balanced with practical examples.
Teachers, historians of education, and collectors of schoolbooks can use the volume to study the development of elementary numeracy and arithmetic pedagogy. Its compact lessons also make comparison with contemporary approaches to number sense, calculation, fractions, and measurement especially straightforward.
Because the exercises are preserved in their original sequence, the reader can examine how difficulty was staged from lesson to lesson rather than seeing only isolated examples. That sequencing is particularly useful for historians of curriculum and textbook design.
