8vo. Hardcover. Pp. 559. Very good condition. Professionally rebound in half-leather over marbled boards. New end-papers. Raised bands on the spine with gilt title on black label. Ex-library copy with library stamp at the bottom of title-page and on the last page, in which there's also a mark left from a previous sticker; library code written in pen on the back of the title-page. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked with light foxing, in remarkably good condition. In 'First Principles', Herbert Spencer expounds the first systematic theory of evolution. According to Spencer, three principles regulate the universe, namely the Law of the Persistence of Force, the Law of the Instability of the Homogeneous and the Law of the Multiplicity of Effects. Herbert Spencer was an English philosopher, psychologist, biologist, anthropologist, and sociologist famous for his hypothesis of social Darwinism. Spencer originated the expression "survival of the fittest", which he coined in Principles of Biology (1864) after reading Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Seller Inventory # 036456
