Item description from seller

BW pictorial wraps. 56 pp. Numerous bw plates. "'How like it is to a young Mohawk warrior!' exclaimed Benjamin West on seeing the Apollo Belvedere. But what ran through his mind on first seeing the Capitoline Venus? There had not even been a cast from the Antique in Philadelphia to prepare him for what he saw in Rome, and in his native Pennsylvania, Indian women were as puritanical about nudity as the settlers. Only after he was long gone from Philadelphia did Aphrodite arrive in a 'plastic condition' at the 'Athens of the Western World.'" - passage from "The First Pose" VG- (Wear and slight soiling to exterior.).
