Although atheists had been targeted for attack by European authorities for many decades, it wasn't until 1673 that a certain brave soul confessed, even boasted, of being an atheist. Matthias Knutzen was the first person known to have adopted this label for himself. In an open letter and two short dialogues, he also professed to reject political authority, priests, the institution of marriage, and anything else that clashes with reason, knowledge, and conscience.
