Print on Demand. This book is the first in a series seeking to describe in a popular and non-technical manner the triumphs of engineers, focusing on the development of fire-fighting techniques and technologies. Bringing the story up to the present day, it covers everything from the earliest fire-fighting devices to the latest steam-powered fire engines and the formation of London's own Fire Brigade. The author argues that the development of the fire engine and the formation of efficient brigades has had a profound impact on the history of firefighting, and that the insights provided in this book are essential for understanding the subject in its full historical and technical context. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

As to fire-brigades, the Insurance Companies, which began to appear after the Great Fire of 1666, were wont to employ separate staffs of men to extinguish fires; but by the year 1833, the more important had united, and the London fire-brigade had been formed under the control of Mr. James Braidwood. Many provincial towns followed the metropolitan model in forming their brigades.
