Add to basket© 1968: A stand-alone novel by R W Mackelworth. 1st printing of 1969 edition. UK SFBC #151. Also later published under the title 'The Diabols. Foxing to text blocks:- Synopsis: The Firemantle is a mysterious enemy which one day could overwhelm the whole Earth. Its probable victory is predicted but one scientist offers a plan which might defeat it. His plan is only accepted out of desperation because it has no time for ethics or human considerations. He suggests the answer to the Firemantle is already locked in the human mind and if it is fed sufficient data it will provide the solution. All he needs is a suitable subject. Boraston, unwillingly, is tricked into the dangerous experiment, which creates an illusion through which the reality of the Firemantle can be explored when its full threat has come to pass Within this strange illusion Boraston is given a series of tasks that reveal the full nature of the Firemantle but he becomes involved in the dangers and sufferings of the people in his new reality. He finds them more demanding than either his fear of his unexpected environment or the compulsions of his task. Gradually his compassion and good humour set him on a different path from what was intended. The reality of his experiences makes the whole illusion suspect. It is possible he has actually stepped into another time and his own immunity to the Firemantle is real and not a delusion. The experiment might not have been what it seemed and Klaus, the scientist, might have known it:- (original cost 8'6).
