From the Author
When I moved to upstate New York in the mid-1980s, I started dreaming in a language I did not know, which proved to be an archaic form of the Mohawk Indian language. In my dreams, a woman healer - an arendiwanen or "woman of power" - and a warrior shaman taught me about the shamanic dreaming traditions of the Mohawks at the time of the firts frontier. In my dreams, I also encountered an Anglo-Irishman with a passion for life who proved to be a distant relative: Sir William Johnson, who was both an adopted Mohawk warchief and the King's Superintendent of Indians on the New York frontier. In the style of a Celtic "tribal king", he built bridges between different communities. My dreams led me down many trails - into encounters with Iroquois Indians on reservations on both sides of the Canadian border, to Johnson's childhood haunts in Ireland (he was born four miles from the high holy hill of Tara), through a tremendous paperchase through archives in Europe and North America. I had to study the Mohawk language to interpret my dreams and bring to full life the characters who stepped straight from the dreams, especially Island Woman, the healer and clanmother whose early trials and initiation are described in my subsequent novel THE INTERPRETER. At times the immensity of the work involved seemed too great. Then another dream came, in which I encountered a circle of people who lived very close to the earth. They welcomed me into their gathering and I sat with them and chanted with them around a great firepit. When the fire became friendly, I lay down in the center of the circle. The dream people took redhot coals from the fire and placed them over my eyes and ears, and on my tongue and over my heart. They said in a beautiful cadenced language - which I now understood - "We do this to open your eyes and ears, that you may see andhear clearly. We do this to open your mouth, that you may speak only truth. And we place fire over your heart so that henceforth you will speak and act only from the heart." My life has been different since then. That powerful dream gave me the confidence to go forward with THE FIREKEEPER - in which similar words are chanted over William Johnson - and abandon narrow, self-limiting, commercial calculations. It led me deeper into the Dreaming.
