He flew aircraft where mistakes cost lives. Then he faced a mission with no checklist.
Jonathan Knaul spent more than three decades as a Royal Canadian Air Force test pilot, trained to manage extreme risk, uncertainty, and responsibility. Yet nothing in the cockpit prepared him for becoming a caregiver to his parents.
In Final Approach, Knaul tells the intimate story of caring for his father through terminal cancer and his mother through dementia, while balancing family, duty, and emotional resilience. Drawing parallels between aviation decision-making and caregiving realities, he offers readers clarity in moments of confusion, calm in moments of fear, and humanity when systems fall short.
This book is both a memoir and a companion for anyone navigating aging parents, serious illness, or the quiet weight of responsibility.
