Synopsis:

The lectures on the Fifth Gospel given in various places in 1913 and 1914 occupy a very special place for spiritual research. Rudolf Steiner himself described the effort it took for him to speak about this material. He did so out of a deep sense of responsibility toward preparations required in our time, and in his awareness of the great necessity for these facts to infuse the development of the world at this very moment.

Of the eighteen lectures delivered in 1913 and 1914, only translations of the first five in Oslo and the last two in Cologne are offered here. The rest of the lectures contained in GA 148 are repetitions of what is covered in these seven lectures - the beginning and the end, so to speak.

About the Authors: During the last two decades of the nineteenth century the Austrian-born Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) became a respected and well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, particularly known for his work on Goethe's scientific writings. After the turn of the century, he began to develop his earlier philosophical principles into an approach to methodical research of psychological and spiritual phenomena. His multi-faceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, science, education (Waldorf schools), special education, philosophy, religion, economics, agriculture, (Bio-Dynamic method), architecture, drama, the new art of eurythmy, and other fields. In 1924 he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world.

Frank Thomas Smith is an American expatriate who has lived most of his life in Europe (Switzerland and Germany) and South America (Argentina). During his career in the airline industry, he moonlighted in education (Waldorf), translating and writing - including children's fiction. What was once moonlighting is now full-time. He lives on a mountain in Argentina.

For 61 years James D. Stewart has been in the Data Processing/Information Technology sphere, applying it to several diverse businesses: importation of marine tropical fish, music arrangements and teaching, elementary education, turnkey hardware and software systems, an Internet Library, and now publishing books. As e.Librarian for The e.Lib, Inc., he oversees several Anthroposophical initiatives.
