Print on Demand. This book is a series of lessons designed to aid adult students of English in learning the language as it is spoken in the United States in everyday conversation. Each section of the book begins with basic comprehension lessons designed to teach the sounds, words, and grammar of English. Beginning with Lesson 21, students progress to reading and writing exercises in addition to the spoken language. Lessons are presented in the context of daily life, from describing physical actions to buying items at a store to talking about family and friends. As students progress, they are encouraged to transfer what they are learning in the classroom to practical situations outside of class. The author emphasizes that the most important element of language learning is speaking the language, and stresses the importance of finding opportunities to converse with native English speakers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This series of lessons has been prepared for candidates for citizenship who are students in the public-school English and citizenship training classes, that they may learn the language of their daily activities and thereby be better able to talk of their daily needs in the language of this country. The lessons gradually, increase in difficulty and are suitable to the ability of men and women of the begin ners' class. The underlying theme is a narrative of the activities of an average family for. An average day, week, month, year. The most outstanding educational need of everybody is to speak the English language; therefore, as much conversation as possible has been introduced into the lesson content, and more conversation is developed as the lessons advance. This has been so arranged as to lead naturally to the later exercises for reading and writing.
