It was a different time - It was a different breed
They were grown children, with little understanding of what was going on in the world or what was in store. They'd been toughened by the Great Depression, and from that perspective, maybe it was a blessing. That toughness would serve them well in the ordeals to come. They enlisted, accepting the forced suppression of their rights as a necessity. Trapped in a hierarchal order that didn’t pretend to be fair, they grumbled and then got on with it.
They would not be coming back
Just boys swept up from their kitchens, who even if they survived, would never be seen again. They returned grown, hardened, and many were damaged - some beyond repair. Soldiers came home happy to be alive, enjoying the company of women again, marriage and kids followed, and all seemed restored. Then in the middle of the 1950’s too many veterans found themselves in VA hospitals. Others had explosive tempers, were too strict with the kids, while most of them had quirks and lesser symptoms that they dealt with quietly.
Twenty-three Biographies
This is not a history of World War Two nor is it a chronicle of strangers. Even though most I've never met, I feel as if I know them. The book is a collection of twenty-three biographies of young men and women trapped by circumstances beyond their control in a war unlike anything the world had ever seen.
The war and the people who fought it are inseparable.
You won't understand one without the other. Reading about the weapons, battles and strategies is not enough. You need to understand the perspective of the troops who fought it. Pictures of these soldiers and sailors show faces unlike anything we see on the streets today. Old young men with no smiles, no hope, and no escape. They understood what they were fighting for, knew the tide was slowly turning, but they held out little hope for themselves. Well aware of how they looked, they called each other dog face - and they meant it.
He didn't want to talk.
Returning troops came home to an overjoyed population that was clueless of what these men and women had gone through. Unlike the British, America never suffered any bombing or threats of invasion. America never experienced their routed armies returning in defeat, lucky to have escaped alive. Veterans had an insurmountable task in trying to get family to understand. Men who hit the deck when a car backfired were the subject of rolled eyes and giggles. They were fodder for comedians looking to get a laugh. No one objected. There was no fixing the problem – the troops got over it and just stopped trying. They didn’t talk about it.
All I can see are the faces
I've been a student of this war for sixty years, studied the battles, the weapons, and the tactics. Now all I can see are the faces. Keep an ear to the wind as you read the biographies, bearing in mind the hope, the fear and the loneliness of these men and women. Most of them had years invested. Put yourself in their shoes for a few hours, preferably in a tent in a storm; and then consider preserving the stories of your parents or grandparents. If we’ve done nothing more than demonstrate that it can be done, that’s enough. This is the last chance they’ll get.
