Build FastAPI applications you can change, refactor, and deploy with confidence.
Writing an API that works is only the beginning. As FastAPI projects grow to include databases, authentication, permissions, asynchronous operations, and external services, reliable automated testing becomes essential.
FastAPI Testing with Pytest and HTTPX is a practical guide to designing clear, maintainable, and production-ready test suites for modern Python APIs. Rather than relying on isolated examples, the book develops a structured testing workflow that can be applied to real FastAPI projects.
You will learn how to test individual business rules, API endpoints, request validation, CRUD operations, database behavior, authentication flows, authorization rules, and external integrations. You will also work with Pytest fixtures, FastAPI dependency overrides, TestClient, HTTPX AsyncClient, ASGITransport, AnyIO, SQLAlchemy test databases, mocking, monkeypatching, parametrized tests, and coverage tools.
As the book progresses, you will learn how to isolate database tests with transactions and rollbacks, verify JWT authentication and protected routes, test roles and resource ownership, mock external HTTP services and side effects, control environment variables and time, and prevent brittle or flaky tests.
The final chapters bring these techniques together into a production-focused workflow using organized unit, integration, and API test suites, Pytest markers, PostgreSQL containers, continuous integration, and release validation.
Whether you are strengthening an existing FastAPI application or building a professional testing strategy from the beginning, this book will help you create tests that catch meaningful regressions, support safer refactoring, and give you greater confidence every time your backend changes.
