Print on Demand. This book analyzes a large survey from the 1950s that compares fertility rates of rural farm-operator households across the United States. The author first considers the large variation in the number of children born to farm families, taking into account the parent’s age and marital status, as well as the region in which they lived and their socioeconomic class. He then discusses the variation by degree of dependence on agriculture, total family income, type of farm, and tenure of farm. The author concludes by noting that regional differences in fertility can be largely attributed to the proportion of nonwhite farm operators in the southern United States, concluding that the high birth rate among southern farm families was primarily due to the high fertility of nonwhite farm families, who at that time made up a quarter of all souther farm families. Despite the data being somewhat dated, this study provides a unique look at the fertility patterns of rural farm families during a time of significant societal change. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This report presents data on ratios of children to women of childbearing age in farm operator households derived from a sample of the returns of the 1950 Censuses of Fopu lation and Agriculture. The matching of data from these two censuses for identical persons offered the opportunity to relate the childbearing patterns in farm-operator households to some of the major features of their farm operation.'4 The sample data are subject to a certain degree of variability, of course, as described in the section on Source and Reliability of Data. The measure of fertility used is the number of children under 5 years old per 1, 000 women 15 to 49 years old. This is commonly termed a fertility ratio. Even though this ratio is a measure of recent rather than lifetime fertility, it is, in the absence of statistics on the total number of children born per woman, a useful index of variation in family size among groups.
