Item description from seller

271 p., music notes Der Schutzumschlag ist bestoßen und etwas eingerissen, die Seiten sind papierbedingt leicht nachgedunkelt, ansonsten ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. / The dust jacket is bumped and somewhat torn, the pages are slightly darkened due to the paper, otherwise a good and clean copy without markings. -- (Publishing text:) AMOUS PUCCINI OPERAS, the second in F Spike Hughes' new series of analytical guides for the opera-goer and armchair listener, is designed particularly as a companion to the new recordings issued in 1958, to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the composer's birth. The pattern of Famous Puccini Operas follows very closely that of the first volume in this series, Famous Mozart Operas, in which the story and music of each work is carefully described and annotated with enlightening critical ob-servations. The chapters are profusely illustrated by musical examples and are so arranged that whichever of the many sets of L.P. records he may possess, the reader will easily be able to match his records with the story and analysis of the opera concerned as it goes along. Spike Hughes, who has many of Puccini's letters and was the author of the composer's life story broadcast in four parts by the B.B.C. a few years ago, applies the same balanced judgment and infectious enthusiasm for his subject to this volume as he did to his study of the operas of Mozart. In one respect Famous Puccini Operas differs from its forerunner in the series: in addition to the familiar works found in the popular repertoire in this country, the author has included a study of an opera rarely performed. here. This is Puccini's Girl of the Golden West, whose inclusion, however, is justified by its frequent performance in the summer al fresco seasons of opera in Italy, which an increasing number of English travellers attend every year, and by a special centenary recording made by Renata Tebaldi and recently released in Great Britain. -- CONTENTS -- PUCCINI AND THE OPERA -- MANON LESCAUT -- ACT I -- ACT II -- ACT III -- ACT IV -- LA BOHÈME -- ACT I -- ACT II -- ACT III -- ACT IV -- TOSCA -- ACT I -- ACT II -- ACT III -- MADAM BUTTERFLY -- ACT I -- ACT II (PART ONE) -- ACT II (PART TWO) -- THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST -- ACT I -- ACT II -- ACT III -- IL TRITTICO -- IL TABARRO -- SUOR ANGELICA -- GIANNI SCHICCHI -- TURANDOT -- ACT I -- ACT II -- ACT III -- APPENDIX A -- APPENDIX B -- GENERAL INDEX -- INDEX OF PUCCINI'S ORCHESTRATION.
