About this Item
This was Elisabeth Cobb Chapman's first book. She was the daughter of Irvin S. Cobb and the mother of Patrizia (Buff) Cobb Chapman (see below). This is a very hard-to-find book. I saw only one other copy for sale anywhere on the Internet (selling at $500.00). Combining that rarity with the presence of '1927' (NAP) on both the copyright and title page (SD) makes me think that this book must have been a first edition. But, from what I've read Doubleday, Page & Company in the early 1920s began to state 'First Edition' to identify it as such. So, who knows? This book has held up quite well. As you can see from the photographs, the covers are fairly clean (there's a little handling soiling on the spine). You would not expect the label on the spine to look as good as it does. The corners of the covers do not show any wear. The spine ends have some creasing. The book which is solidly bound has orange illustrated end papers. The pages in the book are very clean. I really didn't see any conspicuous soiling at all. Nor are there any markings. Nor is there any writing/underlining anywhere in the book. The only conspicuous flaw is cosmetic and only apparent when you hold the book by the spine and turn it around. From this vantage point , the covers of the book are narrower at the center and bow out a little bit at both the top and the bottom. ELISABETH COBB, 56, AUTHOR, SCENARIST Mrs. Rogers wrote under the name of Elisabeth Cobb. Her first novel, "Falling Leaves," was published when she was 21 years old. A later book, "Minstrels in Satan," was based on her childhood in Italy. Her novel "She was a Lady" was made into a movie in 1934. In 1948 "Men We Marry," the play she wrote in collaboration with Herschel Williams, was presented at the Mansfield Theatre. Miss Cobb also wrote "My Wayward Parent," a biography of her father, which was published in 1945. She spent several years as a screen writer in Hollywood and also was a regular contributor of fiction to magazines. She was a former editor of The Bookman and Vanity Fair magazines. She leaves a daughter, Miss Patricia Cobb Chapman, known professionally as Buff Cobb, an actress; a son, Tom Cobb Brody, and her mother, Mrs. Irvin S. Cobb, with whom she lived here and in Colebrook, Conn. She had been married three times and divorced. Her father(Irvin Shrewsbury Cobb was an American author, humorist, editor and columnist from Paducah, Kentucky who relocated to New York in 1904, living there for the remainder of his life. He wrote for the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, as the highest paid staff reporter in the United States. Cobb also wrote more than 60 books and 300 short stories. Some of his works were adapted for silent movies. Several of his Judge Priest short stories were adapted in the 1930s for two feature films directed by John Ford. Her daughter Buff Cobb was an American actress and, with then-husband Mike Wallace (of 60 Minutes fame), host of one of television's first talk shows. Seller Inventory # 000660
