From the Author
You may ask yourself why we are being so harsh on men. While we believe there are reasons for men's troubling behaviors in relationships, we are tired of these reasons being used as excuses for unacceptable behavior. Many books are teeming with advice on how to salvage, spruce up, or bring back the magic to your relationship. The vast majority of the people who read these books are women. Our society encourages women to take responsibility for the emotional maintenance of relationships. Women also tend to place more emphasis on the quality of their relationships than men do. Self-help books about relationships tell women what they want to hear--that men can change. If only HE (not you) would read the book and follow its suggestions, then.... Fat chance. The problem is that contrary to the claims of the popular book, women are actually from earth, men are from Uranus!
Women have been far too willing to give men the benefit of the doubt, to be patient and understanding, and to wait for potential to sprout in the soil of unconditional love. To help women with that tendency, we pull no punches in describing certain types of men. We spell out the characteristics of these toxic guys, describe what they do, how they think, and how they make women feel. A quiz is provided to see if your partner is one of them. We highlight red flags to help you spot them early and suggest ways to test men so you can reveal their true colors. Suggestions are made on both how to decide to get out of the relationship, as well as how to actually get out. Finally, we offer unconventional ways that we bet you haven't thought of before to cope better with them if you decide to stay. These methods turn the tables on him, stop his manipulation and deceit, and allow you to take charge of your emotional destiny. Women are angry and have a right to be. Calling men jerks or pigs just doesn't capture the anger that women have expressed to us in our combined 35 years of therapy experience and does not do justice to the despicable behavior that men regularly exhibit in intimate relationships. If you want help in understanding how they get that way, what they are like, and especially what you can do about it, then this book is for you.
