!!!Faaar Out: Who Was Young John Denver travels back in time to reveal the winding road that John Denver took to fulfill his dream of becoming as big as Frank Sinatra.
Readers will see stories that reveal John’s confidence and energy, and the unique talents he shared. And they'll meet many of those who helped set the table for John's iconic career—a glimpse into Denver's coming of age, and his arrival at the doorstep of fame.
All the characters in the book—the author’s storytellers—are real. Some worked with John on stage, some introduced him to key people, some wrote songs that made the world smile. It’s a book without a plot, only a destination.
Carl Franzen, who wrote the song, "On the Road" (Denver's Back Home Again album), takes the reader on a cross-country journey from Randy Sparks—who gave John his first boost—to the recording of his breakout hit, "Take Me Home, Country Roads."
The book is like a genealogy, showing how one person's effort leads to another's success. It reveals how Denver arrived in Los Angeles as Little Johnny Deutschendorf and left with a more persuasive moniker. You'll follow the priest who guided the Chad Mitchell Trio to New York and introduced them to Nina Simone's agent, who in turn led them to Milt Okun who became John Denver's lifelong friend and music director.
Bill Danoff, the musician who wrote “Country Roads” takes readers back to the moment John first sang "Take Me Home Country Roads" at the Cellar Door in Washington D.C with Danoff and Taffy Nivert at his side—and got a five-minute standing ovation.
The book gives John Denver fans what they love, details. What happened when John called his future wife Annie at her college dormitory to ask for a first date? Or how did John’s first recorded song, “For Bobbie,” come about—a romantic story told by Bobbie herself. And then, how it became “For Baby” when Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary, wanted to sing it for her daughter.
Sometimes the storytellers, including the author, take over and become more important than the reader might expect. It’s as if they are participants at a pickin’ party, each with a different instrument, each with a favorite song to sing. Smiling, strumming, playing a catchy riff to grab your attention. Always, however, with a single destination: Who was Young John Denver?
