FPGAs sit at a unique intersection of hardware and software. They can deliver the parallelism, low latency, and deterministic timing that conventional processors often struggle to provide—but unlocking that potential requires a very different way of thinking.
FPGA-Based Embedded Systems Engineering is a practical guide to designing real-time digital systems with programmable logic, taking you beyond simple LED blinkers and isolated HDL examples and into the engineering decisions that make complete FPGA systems reliable, fast, and useful in the real world.
Rather than treating FPGA development as a collection of Verilog syntax rules or vendor-specific tutorials, this book develops the engineering mindset behind successful FPGA projects. You will learn how to reason about hardware architecture, timing, concurrency, resource utilization, memory movement, verification, and the boundary between hardware and software.
Inside, you will explore:
• FPGA architecture and the role of LUTs, flip-flops, block RAM, DSP resources, clocking, and I/O
• Register-transfer-level design using Verilog and SystemVerilog
• Combinational and sequential logic, finite-state machines, and reusable RTL
• Pipelining and parallel architectures for higher throughput
• Latency, throughput, clock frequency, and resource utilization
• Real-time and deterministic digital processing
• Memory architectures, FIFOs, DMA, and high-speed data movement
• Hardware-software co-design and intelligent hardware/software partitioning
• Embedded processors and RTOS integration
• Custom hardware accelerators and FPGA-based AI applications
• Timing analysis, timing closure, optimization, and power considerations
• Simulation, testbenches, assertions, hardware debugging, and validation
• Complete system-level thinking from specification and architecture through implementation and deployment
Think differently about hardware.
One of the book's most important lessons is that FPGA design is not software programming with a different syntax. HDL describes hardware. A loop, register, pipeline, or state machine can translate into actual physical structures on the device, and understanding that relationship is essential to designing efficient systems.
The book also takes a realistic approach to performance. Instead of simply claiming that FPGAs are "fast," it examines how clock frequency, pipeline depth, initiation interval, memory bandwidth, and available hardware resources determine what a design can actually achieve.
Who is this book for?
This book is written for embedded systems developers, FPGA and digital designers, firmware engineers, electrical and computer engineering students, and engineers working in areas such as robotics, communications, data acquisition, signal processing, computer vision, and edge AI.
It is especially useful if you already understand basic programming and digital logic and want to develop the skills required to design serious FPGA-based systems, rather than simply complete introductory HDL exercises.
You do not need a decade of FPGA experience to begin. What you need is curiosity, a willingness to think in terms of hardware rather than sequential software execution, and an interest in understanding why an FPGA architecture works—not merely how to write the code.
From architecture and RTL design to optimization, hardware-software integration, verification, and physical deployment, FPGA-Based Embedded Systems Engineering provides a structured path toward thinking and working like an FPGA systems engineer.
If you want to move from writing HDL that synthesizes to engineering FPGA systems that are predictable, efficient, and production-minded, this book is for you.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to AHA-BUCH GmbH, Einbeck, Germany, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
