Item description from seller

BOOK DESCRIPTION: Second edition (originally published in 1864), 191pgs. Original printed wrappers with metal staples. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor rubbing to spine ends, lower corner slightly chipped and bumped; else little evidence of use. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was Captain, Co. H, Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. From his Preface:"Without any crime I have been an inmate of the foulest of Southern prisons, and a companion of the brave men whose condition and treatment has called forth the sympathy of the nation, and which will yet call forth the condemnation of the civilized world. I was one of the party that planned and executed one of the most remarkable escapes known to history, the record of which will be enduring as that of the war itself." After describing his first battles, at Shiloh and Stone River, Captain Johnston's narrative covers the march to Chickamauga and the ensuing conflict, during which he was captured and taken to Libby Prison in Richmond. After his escape and successful evasion back to Union lines, he rejoined his regiment and participated in the campaign against Atlanta. This is a good prison narrative, and unusual in the details of the tunnel escape-plot and its successful use; tunnels are especially difficult to pull off, but here a classic tale.
