THREE VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. 5 x 7.5 inches. Vol. I, [ii] + 304 pp.; Vol. II, [ii] + 316 pp,; Vol. III, [ii] + 380 pp. Lacks half title and advertisements, discarded by binder. Bound in original half calf over marbled boards; spines in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt, with contrasting morocco title labels, gilt. A little wear to extremities and some foxing largely confined to fly leaves; otherwise a very good clean set First edition of a novel of society life, published anonymously but known to be the work of Lady Charlotte Bury, née Campbell (1775-1861). She wrote several novels in a similar vein, including The Separation, and Disinherited and the Ensnared. She was a Lady-in-Waiting in the household of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and her diary of these experiences, and her later Diary Illustrative of the Time of George IV (1838), her best known work, were also published anonymously.
