The book ia an account of the author's travels, starting in 1844 aboard the "Worcester" , on a journey to China and back, a journey that includes Ascencion, St Helena, Calcutta, Java, Hong Kong, Canton, Ceylon, Tuticorin [ Toothukudi ], Bombay, Aden, Egypt and Malta.
