Item description from seller

Five inscribed titles, late in the prolific career of staff writer of The New Yorker, novelist and screenwriter Eric Hatch (1901 - 1973), inscribed to prominent resident, Tracy Griswold, of Litchfield CT, where Hatch lived in his later years. Hatch was best known for comic novels, his most consequential "1101 Park Ave (1935 ) which was the basis for the classic screwball comedy "My Man Godfrey" (1936), starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, which he co-authored and for which he received an Oscar nomination. He then co-authored another screwball classic "Topper" (1937), starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett. In Litchfield, Hatch was active in civic and social affairs, including the vibrant riding and carriage scene, which is the topic of some of the books in this lot. By year, titles are: THE JUDGE AND THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR: A GUIDE TO BLUE RIBBON RIDING. NY: Duell Sloan, 1964. Inscribed on the half-title. Laid in are 9 snapshots of Hatch driving a carriage, one with his wife Connie and another with an unidentified man. THE YEAR OF THE HORSE. NY: Crown, 1965. Inscribed on ffe. A comic novel about how a loving father endures his teenage daughters devotion to riding. Adapted as the Disney movie, "The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit" (1968) starring Dean Jones and with a young Kurt Russell. THE COLONEL LADIES. NY: Crown, 1968. Inscribed on the ffe: "For Tarcy, Here is a little hostess present I made for you with my own hands. It might have been better if I had used my head as well. With love, Eric Hatch April 5, 1968." TWO AND TWO IS SIX. NY, Cown, 1969. Inscribed on the ffe. For juvenile readers. WHAT GOES ON IN HORSES' HEADS. NY: Putnam, 1960. Inscribed on the ffe. Another juvenile. Store description

Johnnycake Books trades in rare and collectible books of most kinds, principally in fields of literature, illustrated, childrens, architecture/design, gardening and photography. We try to offer books that are a little unusual, offbeat and unexpected: most have a strong visual or design appeal. Our descriptions present our inventory as creatively and colorfully as possible, with occassional editorial commentary. We regard condition of our books as critical to our service: most are very good or better, in collectible condition. We are generally conservative in describing a book, even if that means it doesn't sound as good as it actually might be. We welcome your comments directly at johnnycake@snet.net or visit our website www.johnnycakebooks.com. Best wishes in your book collecting. Dan Dwyer…
