Tristan da Cunha est une minuscule île volcanique de près de 100 kilomètres carrés découverte en 1506 par le navigateur portugais du même nom. D'appartenance britannique, elle forme un triangle parfait situé au milieu de l'océan Atlantique sud et constitue le territoire habité
le plus isolé de la planète, à huit jours de bateau du Cap en Afrique du Sud, et seul moyen de s'y rendre. Le photographe français Richard Pak s'est tout d'abord intéressé à cet archipel dans le cadre de l'anthologie qu'il a entreprise (Les îles du désir) consacrée à l'espace insulaire.
Comme l'explique le photographe : " L'île, espace de peu de monde, nourrit un imaginaire commun au plus grand nombre. Au-delà de l'éloignement simple, elle induit l'idée d'une rupture avec le quotidien. Les îles fascinent le voyageur comme elles façonnent leurs habitants. Et je ne pouvais trouver guère mieux que Tristan da Cunha pour
entamer un cycle sur l'insularité. "
Au-delà du caractère exceptionnel de l'isolement géographique de Tristan da Cunha, Richard Pak est fasciné par son histoire singulière et les valeurs idéalistes fondatrices de cette communauté. Ses habitants actuels sont tous des descendants d'exilés et de naufragés arrivés à la suite du britannique William Glass. En 1817, alors que sa garnison
quitte l'île, lui décide de rester avec femme et enfants.
Un accord est signé entre la couronne et " the firm ", tels qu'ils s'y désignent. Le document est considéré comme la première constitution de Tristan da Cunha. Ses quelques articles y annoncent notamment : " nul ne s'élèvera ici au-dessus de quiconque " ; " tous doivent être considérés égaux " et " tous les profits réalisés seront partagés
équitablement ". Il n'y a pas de propriété privée, pas de chef, pas d'argent (la monnaie d'échange est alors la pomme de terre), tous s'entraident mutuellement. L'expérience utopique reste dans l'anonymat jusqu'en 1961, quand le volcan s'ébroue. Craignant la destruction totale de l'île, l'entière population est évacuée et propulsée
en plein XXe siècle de la Grande-Bretagne post-industrielle.
Mais les tristanais ne sont pas très impressionnés par ce monde moderne si loin du leur et préfèrent repartir deux ans plus tard. Un véritable camouflet pour une Angleterre qui pensait tant les sauver que les éclairer. Aujourd'hui encore la propriété privée n'existe pas et les
terrains sont communaux.
À travers cet ouvrage, Richard Pak souhaite raconter l'histoire singulière de cette communauté et comment elle évolue aujourd'hui avec l'héritage des principes idéalistes d'égalité et de partage qui la fondent. Il constitue l'aboutissement d'un travail documentaire au long
cours où le photographe vit en immersion avec son sujet, associant la photographie à ses recherches historiques et littéraires.
Richard Pak est un auteur pluridisciplinaire né en France
en 1972. Photographie documentaire, recherches
plastiques, convocation du récit ou de la vidéo : Richard
Pak affirme sa liberté d'écriture et nous entraine rarement
là où on l'attend. Il mène depuis plusieurs années un
projet de recherche artistique sur l'insularité. Le travail de
Richard Pak a fait l'objet de nombreuses expositions
individuelles en France et en Europe. Il a publié deux
monographies aux éditions Filigranes et ses photographies
font partie de collections publiques et privées dont
celles de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, de la
Galerie Le Château d'Eau à Toulouse et de la Collection
Neuflize OBC.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to BOOKIT!, Genève, Switzerland, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
