FIREGROUND TACTICS AND FIRE BEHAVIOR
A Practical Guide to Fire Behavior, Tactical Thinking, Decision-Making, Leadership, and Becoming a Better Firefighter
Fireground operations are fast, unpredictable, and unforgiving. In the middle of a rapidly changing incident, firefighters must be able to read conditions, understand fire behavior, make sound tactical decisions, communicate effectively, and act with purpose under pressure.
FIREGROUND TACTICS AND FIRE BEHAVIOR is a practical guide for firefighters who want to strengthen their understanding of what happens on the fireground and learn how to think and operate more effectively when conditions change.
This book explores the connection between fire behavior, tactical strategy, situational awareness, decision-making, leadership, and firefighter safety, helping readers develop a more disciplined approach to fireground operations.
Inside, you’ll explore:
- Fire Behavior Fundamentals — Understand how fire develops, spreads, and changes, and why recognizing these changes matters on the fireground.
- Fireground Tactics — Examine tactical considerations for size-up, fire attack, search, ventilation, and coordinated operations.
- Tactical Thinking and Decision-Making — Develop the ability to assess changing conditions, prioritize objectives, and make better decisions under pressure.
- Situational Awareness — Learn to recognize hazards, changing fire conditions, warning signs, and critical information that can influence tactical choices.
- Leadership on the Fireground — Explore communication, accountability, coordination, and the mindset required to lead effectively during stressful incidents.
- Firefighter Safety and Risk Management — Build a stronger understanding of risk, situational control, teamwork, and when changing conditions may require a change in strategy.
- Professional Growth — Develop habits of preparation, reflection, continuous learning, and tactical improvement that can help you become a more capable firefighter.
Whether you are a new firefighter building your foundation, an experienced firefighter sharpening your skills, or an officer developing stronger tactical leadership, this book provides practical concepts to help you approach the fireground with greater confidence and purpose.
The goal isn’t simply to tell you what to do. It is to help you understand why decisions matter, how fire conditions influence tactics, and how better thinking can lead to better performance.
Study the fire. Read the conditions. Think tactically. Make the decision. Lead with purpose. Become a better firefighter.
FIREGROUND TACTICS AND FIRE BEHAVIOR is a practical resource for anyone committed to improving their knowledge, judgment, leadership, and effectiveness on the fireground.
