In 1940 RAF Fighter Command fought and won the most famous air battle of the war: the battle of Britain. Had it lost, Hitler's armies might well have crossed the English Channel to dictate peace terms in London. This great defensive victory was followed by years of offensive operations, wearing down the Luftwaffe in the certain knowledge that, without air superiority the Allies would never liberate Europe.
