Paged as i-xviii, 9-471 . Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13.25cm. Reddish-brown leather-style spine with brown pebbled cloth boards; spine scuffed with small loss to otherwise still fairly bright gilt lettering; tearing at upper front joint with slight slender splitting near heel; boards rubbed with worn corners; staining to rear board. Text block edges toned with faint hint of long-faded marbling. Foxing, toning, and some stains to interior leaves with a few edge-tears and creased corners; pencil notes on front free endpaper but no other writing readily apparent upon a very cursory perusal; slender shallow moisture stains along tops of rear leaves with loss at top of rear free endpaper where missing remnant has adhered to pastedown. Oval bookseller trade stamp in blue ink "Complimentary Copy | From | M.W. Hazen, | Hawley St. | Boston. | Your Opinion Solicited." at page v's top right. Marshman William Hazen (1845-1911) was a Boston, Massachusetts school textbook publisher and distributor. Copyright date of 1878 but with title page dated 1879. Binding is firm.
