Principles, Image Acquisition, Diagnostic Interpretation, and Perinatal Application
Fetal Echocardiography Practical Guide is a comprehensive educational resource designed to help healthcare learners and professionals develop a structured understanding of fetal cardiac imaging, anatomy, physiology, diagnostic interpretation, and perinatal application.
Rather than focusing only on memorizing standard ultrasound views, this guide emphasizes systematic examination, clinical reasoning, image interpretation, and understanding the relationship between fetal cardiac anatomy, blood flow, function, rhythm, and disease.
What you will discover inside:
- Embryology and cardiac development — understand how the fetal heart forms and develops, providing the foundation for recognizing congenital abnormalities.
- Normal fetal cardiac anatomy — learn systematic assessment of situs, cardiac position and axis, atria, ventricles, atrioventricular junctions, valves, great arteries, and venous return.
- Fetal circulation and physiology — develop a clearer understanding of fetal blood flow and the physiological principles behind cardiac assessment.
- Ultrasound physics, equipment, and safety — explore the technical principles needed for effective image acquisition and optimization.
- Practical examination techniques — follow a structured approach to fetal cardiac imaging, including standard 2D views, Doppler assessment, measurements, functional evaluation, and rhythm assessment.
- Congenital heart disease — build a systematic approach to identifying and interpreting important structural cardiac abnormalities.
- Arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities — understand the assessment of fetal cardiac rhythm and conduction.
- Maternal and pregnancy-related influences — consider how maternal disease, multiple pregnancy, and altered fetal circulation can affect the fetal heart.
- Genetic and extracardiac considerations — recognize the relationship between cardiac findings and broader fetal conditions.
- Fetal cardiac intervention and surveillance — explore principles of serial assessment and specialized fetal cardiac care.
- Counselling and perinatal planning — connect prenatal cardiac findings with communication, multidisciplinary care, delivery planning, and neonatal management.
- Diagnostic reasoning and patient safety — develop a disciplined approach to moving from an abnormal image toward a reasoned diagnosis while recognizing the limitations of fetal echocardiography.
This guide is suitable for:
- Medical and nursing students
- Sonography and allied health students
- Sonographers and imaging professionals
- Obstetric and maternal-fetal medicine trainees
- Clinicians involved in fetal and perinatal care
Fetal echocardiography is more than obtaining a collection of ultrasound images. It requires an understanding of development, anatomy, physiology, imaging technique, hemodynamics, pathology, clinical reasoning, and communication. This book brings these elements together into a progressive learning framework designed to help readers understand not only what they are seeing, but why it matters.
With its combination of foundational science, practical examination principles, diagnostic interpretation, clinical integration, and perinatal application, Fetal Echocardiography Practical Guide provides a valuable foundation for anyone seeking to develop a more systematic and clinically informed approach to fetal cardiac assessment.
A practical learning companion for understanding the fetal heart—from its development and normal anatomy to imaging, diagnosis, and perinatal care.
