A previous dealer's pencilled note (easily eraseable) to top pastedown Vol.1 states that the author was Wm Lennox', which clearly wrong, and that it was 1st published in the same year, which is correct. Vol.1: t.p. with small central vignette+vi+(10, unpaginated, Contents)+271 with engraved small tailpiece end text; slight cracking to frotn gutter but this quite secure, edge tanning from paste-down through to t.p. and final text leaf to end pastedown, this apparently an effect of the binding method, bottom margins, towards outer corner, of leaves 175/6 and 177/8 have triangular burn chip (3 cm x 1 cm on latter, less on former) with brown scorch-marked edges, no text loss, these have now been sealed to avert crumbling of edges, a few minor upper corner creases but otherwise clean and unmarked internally; covers generally clean, boards have gilt ruled edge lines,rubbing to extremeties, panelled spine has some cracking from age but seems quite sound, gilt panel lines and Vol.number, new title label; Vol.2.: t.p. with small central vignette+322, small engraved vignette end text: condition as Vol.1 (without small burn!) but t.p. edges very rubbed and chipped with border tanning, resulting loss of c.3mm to top edge, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked, covers also as Vol.2 but retaining original spine label, small dark mark to centre fore-edge. Extremely scarce in any condition and this, despite faults as described, remains a very acceptable, if unsophisticated, copy of a highly acclaimed novel.
