"About one hundred and twenty full page and numerous text illustrations, sixteen coloured plates in facsimile from Dr. Nansen's own sketches, etched portrait, photogravures and maps." Two volumes octavo, original green combed cloth, title gilt to spine and upper board, gilt pictorial vignettes "The Fram" to volume I, and "Northwards through the Drift Snow" to volume II - to the upper boards. 4 folding coloured maps, 2 at the rear of each volume. Considered one of the primary explorations in Polar history, Nansen's classic voyage in the Fram, attained point closest to the North Pole at the time, made major explorations by sledge, and conducted scientific discovery. "Narrative of the First Fram Expedition, 1893-1896, led by Nansen, with the object of investigating the polar basin north of Eurasia by drifting in the ice with the currents northwest from the New Siberian Islands across or near the Pole" (Arctic Bibliography). Tipped-in letter, SIGNED by Fridtjof Nansen and Inscribed to Sir Clements Markham (father of British Polar Exploration). Volume II spine damage professionally repaired, attractive set, slightly shelfworn, with some marks and indentations on the boards, bumped corners, otherwise internally crisp clean copy.
