They were given little chance of success. England had last beaten Australia on their own soil in the Bodyline tour of 1932/33 and this Australian team contained some of the greatest names ever to wear the baggy green cap.
The Australian bowling attack was, arguably, the strongest in their history. Ray Lindwall and Keith Miller were supported by Alan Davidson, Ian Johnston, Bill Johnson and the bourgeoning talents of Richie Benaud. The experienced Arthur Morris topped a batting order that included the sublime skills of Neil Harvey
One England bowler rose to the challenge magnificently and dominated the series. After starting off with 1 for 160 in defeat at Brisbane, he shortened his run and took 10 wickets at Sydney, and nine more at Melbourne, when he took 7 for 27 in the second innings and scared the Aussies to death. There can have been few faster spells in history than Tysons in that innings. It was this spell of bowling which saw him gain the nickname "Typhoon".
The tourists went on to win the series at Adelaide and then travelled to New Zealand, where Tyson played a lead role in a 2-0 victory, including bowling the home team out for the lowest score in Test history, 26, at Auckland.
Throughout the tour, Tyson kept a diary and took many photographs. Published for the first time, In the Eye of the Typhoon is the fast bowler's recollections of that tour based on that diary, illustrated with more than 100 photographs, most of which have not been seen before.
But In the Eye of the Typhoon is not just an exceptional written and visual history of one of the happiest and most successful tours in English cricket history. It is a tale of comradeship and togetherness; of bonding and growing up in unfamiliar environs; a travelogue where the new world of Australasia comes splendidly alive from the metropolis of Melbourne to the wilds of the Outback and on to the mountains of New Zealand. It is a tale of people and places against a background of the highest of sporting achievements.
