Blends biblical text and Eastern thought For more than twenty years, Zen sessions have been held at the abbey where Jeroen Witkam was abbot. The sole aim of these sessions, according to Witkam, has been the integration of Zazen into the Christian prayer life. During these sessions, readings were taken from the Christian scriptures to help the monks contemplate and meditate. Their ways of sitting and breathing were taken from the tradition of Zazen. They discovered that Zazen - emptying or the attainment of a transparent heart and mind - matched essential elements of the Christian spiritual path. Moreover, they realized that both Christian spirituality and Zen Buddhism had at their core the principle of compassion. Both religious traditions, in combination, provided an enriched contemplative life and a fuller appreciation of the spiritual path. THE EYE AWARE shows how the discipline and mindfulness cultivated by Zen meditation can help reinvigorate and focus the life of Christian prayer.
