Item description from seller

5. Octr. 1739. 49 lines on 2pp 4to, with integral blank. Paper watermarked 'V CVSSON'. Gabriel Cramer, 1704-1752, became Chair of Mathematics at Geneva in 1734, specialising in algebra and geometry; he introduced Newton's natural philosophy to the university. In the year of this letter, Cramer founded a learned society for Genevan scientists. Cramer's letter is concerned with latitude and longitude, referring to an inaccurate map of Lake Geneva and the surrounding areas by Buache and variations in his calculations from those made in Paris and London by Nicolas Fatio de Duilliers, a Swiss disciple of Newton - particularly relating to the positioning of the Castle Duillier on the map. (Carte du Lac de Genève et des Pays Circonvoisins, sur les Cartes de Fatio, Roverea et Autres; réduite par Philippe Buache. Paris. 1740.) There is also mention of eclipses earlier in the century and the measurement of the longitude of Geneva. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.…
