Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. Several pages unopened. Pamphlet composed of separate signatures but is complete. No date, circa 1846. 6 1/4" x 9 3/4." Thirty-eight pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and occasional spots of foxing or discoloration. A Very Good copy. "Vol. IV--No. 5" of Peter Force's Collection of Historical Tracts. This is a pamphlet published by Peter Force that reprints extracts of journals that belonged to Philipp Georg Friedrich von Reck (1710-1798) and Johann Martin Boltzius (1703-1765). Von Reck was a Freiherr of Hanover charged with overseeing secular duties during the first and third journeys of the Salzburg Emigrants (also known as the Salzburgers), German-speaking Lutheran settlers who fled religious persecution in Salzburg. The Salzburg Emigrants founded the community of Ebenezer, Georgia. Von Reck apparently had many disputes with Boltzius and later returned to Europe and joined the Hanover and Danish civil service. Boltzius was a German-American Lutheran minister. He was a leader of the Salzburg Emigrants. In their journals, Von Reck and Salzburg both write about the Carolina Colony (Von Reck also references Georgia Colony) and day-to-day events. Von Reck describes discontent among African-American slaves in Carolina Colony and says that this is part of the reason why African-American slavery is prohibited in Georgia Colony. Both Von Reck and Boltizus write about Christian subjects and the Salzburgers. Von Reck's journal entries appear to focus more on Carolina Colony. Von Reck describes some of the Indigenous Peoples there and interactions between them and the Salzburgers. The original document this pamphlet reprints was first published in 1734 under the direction of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Peter Force (1790-1868) was an American printer, publisher, editor, and historian. Force is perhaps best-known for his comprehensive collection of early American historical documents and for publishing them. This pamphlet is an example of one of Force's publications that became a part of a his four-volume publication of reprinted historical documents titled, Tracts and Other Papers, Relating to the Origin, Settlement, and Progress of the Colonies in North America, that was published between 1836 and 1846.…
