From Expendable to Escaped: A Journey of SurvivalBy Mesfin Hagos Tewolde From Expendable to Escaped: A Journey of Survival, Mesfin Hagos Tewolde takes readers on a gripping journey through his life, marked by resilience, hope, and the relentless quest for freedom. Born into a world defined by both tradition and turmoil, Mesfin's story unfolds against the backdrop of Eritrea and Ethiopia's turbulent histories, where identity and survival are constantly at odds.Raised in a politically charged environment, Mesfin navigates the complexities of being an Eritrean in Ethiopia during a period of intense socio-political upheaval. From witnessing the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie and the rise of the Mengistu regime to facing forced conscription and ethnic discrimination, his life is a testament to the power of perseverance.Mesfin's narrative is not just one of struggle; it is also a story of hope and transformation. As he recounts his harrowing escape from Eritrean military service and his perilous journey as a refugee in Kenya, readers are offered an intimate look at the human spirit's capacity to endure and overcome. Alongside his personal trials, Mesfin reflects on broader themes of identity, belonging, and the deep bonds of family and community that helped him survive. The memoir also offers a critical perspective on leadership and governance in Eritrea, shedding light on the country's post-independence challenges and the quest for justice and true freedom. From Expendable to Escaped is more than a memoir; it is an inspiring account of courage, resilience, and the unyielding desire for a better future.
