Expansive soils are problematic in nature by virtue of their innate capacity to undergo volume changes when there are changes in moisture regime. These soils swell when they absorb water and shrink when water evaporates from them. About the Author: B. R. Phanikumar is a Senior Professor in Civil Engg at VIT, Vellore, India. His research areas are expansive soils and ground improvement. He published about 250 papers in various international journals and conferences. Sana Suri is a Research Student at VIT. She too works in Expansive Soils and has authored a few research papers in the field.
