In ancient times, when shaman gathered on the plains, huddled around the fire in caves, when they talked in temples of civilisations which have long been forgotten or become Myth, they shared a secret. A legacy shown to them by the elder race, who in turn were shown by the sea people. We know them as Cetaceans - Dolphins and Whales whom we barely understand. But once long ago they shared with us water-time and the power of the song.
The evidence exists in the remains of legends, folklore and tribal traditions of many of the races over the millennia. The last fragments were quickly lost as their people no longer sang because the "Civilised Ones" came and swallowed them up. But in spite of being eaten, some of their magic and wisdom survives. We see this change as a product of the last three hundred years as The Europeans expanded outwards to exploit new lands. In truth it's part of a cycle that goes back as far as humanity does.
To the Cetaceans what we may call the soul they would call the song. Now the nature of that song is what is important - it should be considered a Harmonic, a vibrational frequency which resonates in harmony. The nature of Water-time ranges from the simple mind to mind sharing to a complex pattern involving sight, sound, touch, and taste. A Watersinger is someone using the expression of his/her song or soul infused outwards to water-time and beyond. To change the very nature of reality - the combined Harmonic of life itself. As in all things some are good, bad or indifferent, and you will meet and share the water-time of several in this novel - an expression of that song.
Some of the words in this novel may not trip off the tongue lightly, others hear the harmony and have no trouble, but the Harmonic they represent is a glimmer of the whole. Names such as Mel-e-gar or Tan-e-lea for example are easy, representing three tones combined with a visual shell. Translating isn't easy but this way preserves the essence of the combined Harmonic. A word like Aiouqes for example will be pronounced differently by the reader and will blend with their harmony to create something new and I would not impugn that by fixing their pronunciation in stone. If you like, they become the representation of the Chaos element of the song. This is important in any Harmonic construction.
Returning to the Shaman and why I pulled something from us into an introduction about them and the Worlds of Dolph/in kind, contrary to popular belief you cannot teach enlightenment. Something Mel-e-gar and Tan-e-lea learn. It's a journey exploring the Harmonic. You either discover this for yourself or like the Watersingers in this book you may be born with a slightly greater instinctive understanding of the potential of it. When Humanity was far more open about what is now considered by many to be mystical nonsense, the truth was expressed in the song, and they discovered that the most enlightened of their number, (not meaning superior intellect) could be catalysts. These walking time bombs who without needing to even open their mouths had the effect of changing those around them thus creating the raw creative pulse which causes other songs to harmonise. Those affected would sometimes curse the ones responsible. Because if the responding song (and they all respond one way or the other) is out of tune, it's not nice to suddenly come face to face with your own discords. But a few would rise to the challenge - to begin their own unique journey, to really dare to explore strange new worlds in the comprehension of the divinity of reality, their part in it and the effect they have with the other songs around them. To care beyond their own frame of reference, to discard the straight jacket of dogma and to make the world a more colourful and exciting place to live, taking as much care as they could to help others do the same. They would show others by example rather than preach - If I'm not too careful this will sound as if I'm doing just that! However that cobbled road is a road best stepped upon lightly.
Returning to the shaman, they found new ways, and lost part of the plot. Ritual became more important, words turned to ashes and the paint on the pictures quickly went mouldy until somebody came along and redressed it - a touch up job. So it has continued century after century. The world is full to the brim of it! You see it.
There have been many individuals who expressed the power of the Harmonic and captivated generations. But the songs have lost much of their power, often through neglect or deliberately altered to tell a new story that in itself negates the random element which makes the harmony most powerful. That's why the story must keep a full range and the Harmonic should only be felt and not seen. Then it's seen. Millennia ago a man expressed, in story form, a universal Harmonic. Then they killed him and wrote down their version thus changing the Harmony. His song was only expressed once in its unadulterated form, before others came along and paraphrased him. It changed and ultimately has largely been lost. This shows how an individual, expressing a universal Harmonic cannot rely on it not being changed by others. The sound is fluid to the interaction of other songs. Therefore the dangers of becoming a follower are apparent, especially if you cannot be sure the source hasn't already been tampered with. Blindly obeying another song may leave you - the follower in danger of being served up as roast lamb! Tasty but not so lucky for you.
In truth the path to enlightenment doesn't exist. You create enlightenment for yourself. This endeavor can be risky and you may get burnt along the way. You even risk your life in the fulfilment of all those glorious colours and rich tones that make up your unique song. Because those that wrap themselves in fear, afraid of the unknown will always attack the unusual and unique. If we let them win we lose our song. So know this, singing that song is the most powerful expression of your life. Go for it, be not afraid, and if you are still reading this - enjoy the story, and enjoy the Harmonic - I hope it inspires you to go out there and explore for yourself. That's your truth, as individual as yourself and as you go - take care of each other, even if you have to say goodbye to allow them to say hello to their truths. Someday we may sing well enough to understand those that brought the legacy long ago, which we let slip into the crack in the dusty floorboards of history - So, when you pass a Dolphin or Whale or any of the Cetaceans look them in the eye and say Thanks. I can assure you they will understand. And if you can try and stop people from eating them or killing them for so called scientific research (Norway and Japan I'm talking to you. - That should kill any sales in those countries.) - then do so.
You wouldn't like it if your Mother was harpooned, dragged out of her front door and gutted on the street - Would You? So you can imagine how they might feel - and you never know the consequences of that Harmonic!
We dreamt, We listened, We waited
For another voice in the darkness.
But they were already here.
We just could not conceive that
They would be as they have always been.
Through time and stars they came
For a home to find
And here they stayed
To make their race as Dolphin kind.
This is their beginning.....
