Hirschman is one of the centenarians who rise from classic shelves and offer a fresh message. Claus Leggewie
»Exit, Voice, and Loyalty« (1970) is one of the standard works of the 20th century. Economist Albert O. Hirschman has pushed the boundaries of his subject and provided a guide to collective action: while exit means churn, Voice describes political action (contradiction, protest, engagement). There is a voltage between the two poles: even voters can wander and customers complain. How do the exit waves of GDR citizens fit into this scheme? Hirschman, who only visited his hometown Berlin shortly before the fall of the wall, has updated his theories with great pleasure to describe the "turn". Both texts, the classic from 1970 and the 1992 essay on the "fate of the GDR", are first published in a volume, supplemented by a foreword by the editor Alexander Karschnia and an afterword by Patrick Eiden-Offe.
Albert O. Hirschman was born Otto-Albert Hirschmann in Berlin in 1915. He came from an educational bourgeois secularized Jewish family. In April 1933, he first fled from Germany to Paris and London. He fought in the Spanish Civil War, was in political resistance against the Mussolini dictatorship in Italy, helped evacuate from France alongside Varian Fry from 1940 in the Emergency Rescue Committee in Marseille, persecuted by the Nazis. In 1941, he finally had to settle himself to the USA. After World War II, Hirschman was in the office of the Marshall Plan.
and at the World Bank. From 1952 to 1956, he was an economic consultant in Latin America and has since been considered a pioneer of critical development policy. From 1956, he taught at Yale, Harvard and finally in Princeton. From 1990 to 1995, Hirschman was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. He died in the United States in 2012.
