Neuware - A proof of God built from a single piece of fruit. Twelve and a half centuries ago, Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) set down, in a letter to his student Mufaddal ibn 'Umar, his discourse with an atheist. Taking the humble haleela-the myrobalan fruit the man was grinding into medicine-as the centre of his argument, the Imam builds, step by reasoned step, a proof of the existence and oneness of God drawn entirely from observation and intellect, without appeal to scripture or threat. This first complete illustrated English edition presents that masterwork of rational theology in a fresh literary translation by Shah Asad Rizvi, with the scientific annotations of Muhammad Ali Syed and newly commissioned colour illustrations, diagrams and hand-coloured botanical engravings. In these pages: - - The full Hadith of the Myrobalan, rendered in clear, modern English- - An argument for God drawn from medicine, the human body, the seas, the skies and the stars- - Reason and reflection as a path to certainty-'Come and think'- - Scholarly forewords introducing the text and its place in Islamic thought- - Original illustrations and diagrams that trace each step of the argument- A short, profound classic of Islamic theology and the dialogue between faith and reason-for the believer, the seeker and the sceptic alike.…
