JOSEPH ANDERSON was a senator from Tennessee, born near Philadelphia on November 5, 1757. He attained the rank of brevet major during the Revolutionary War. He studied law and was admitted and practiced in Delaware for several years. He was appointed United States judge of the Territory South of the River Ohio in 1791. He was also a member of Constitutional Convention of Tennessee. During the Madison administration, he was appointed first Comptroller of the Treasury and served from 1815 to 1836. Single page letter signed by Anderson, along with his free frank, 7 7/8 x 9 7/8. With a manuscript letterhead, Treasury Department, Comptroller s Office, 21 September 1824, Anderson writes to Samuel A. Morse, Collector of the Machias, Maine. Your account of the Customs for the 2nd granted of 1824 have been adjusted at the Treasury to a Balance of $892 stated to be due from you to the U. States consisting of Bonds----$1,129,41, deduct Cash account in anticipation $237.20.The balance which you stated to be due is $858.75. Anderson continues with his reconciliation and concludes that Morse owes $891.21. Nice docketing on the verso, including an integral address leaf that contains a bold signature of Anderson. Folds, light toning. Some ink smudging on the address leaf. Anderson was a Freemason. In 1791 President George Washington appointed him as United States judge of the newly formed Southwest Territory.
