The Evolution of the Hebrew People and Their Influence on Civilization by Laura H. Wild, published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1917. A scholarly history of the Hebrew people from their earliest origins through the development of ancient Israel, examining the political, religious, and cultural forces that shaped one of the foundational civilizations of the ancient Near East. Wild integrates biblical narrative with the archaeological and historical scholarship of the early twentieth century, tracing the evolution of Hebrew society, law, prophecy, monarchy, and religious thought while considering Israel’s interactions with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaan, and the wider ancient world. Particular attention is given to the emergence of ethical monotheism, the development of the prophetic tradition, and the enduring influence of Hebrew religious, legal, and moral ideals upon Western civilization. Complete with the folding color map of Palestine in pristine condition. An appealing provenance copy bearing the ownership signature of Simon J. Lubin (1876–1936), the noted California businessman, philanthropist, civic leader, and advocate for agricultural and social reform. Hardcover in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Light chipping to spine head. A small puncture to the lower front board extending into the lower margin of the text block without affecting the text; otherwise a sound copy.…
